How does filament
voltage affect the life of oscillator valve?
A.
Ideally the life of the tube
is determined by the time taken to evaporate the carbon from carbide layer.
This process is called decarburisation. As a result the filament voltage
applied to the tube is very critical and it most applications stabilised supply
is essential.
Consider a case where filament voltage is 10 Volts and the
designed life is 10 to 15,000 hrs. then running at 10.5 Volts will shorten this
life to 5 - 7,500 hrs. Again running at 9.5 Volts will lengthen this life to
20-30,000 hrs. A reduction of more than 10% in filament voltage is not
recommended because the filament surface may get poisoned.
Q.
How should I protect
my valves from over heating?
A.
Always maintain the recommended water / air flow as given in
our data sheet for respective model (water / air flow / kW curves). Ensure
healthy condition of flow switches and tripping relays. We strongly recommend
use of protections like Thermal Fuse / P.T.F.E. activated micro switches and
relays. Thermal Fuse is a very reliable device which goes off at designed
temperature (70ºC & 95ºC). These Thermal Fuses are available ex-stock at
AIMIL.
Following activities and operations are recommended.
1. Check quality of water / air (de-mineralised water strongly recommended).
2. Check electronics and operability of protection devices at regular
intervals.
3. Check rate of flow of water / air into / out of valve.
4. Monitor temperature in the water, on the valve (filaments, anode) in the
chamber etc.
5. Monitor the biasing voltages and currents, take suitable actions.
6. De-scale water fitting and water jackets at regular intervals. Use 5% to 10%
Citric or Formic acid solution in water to cleanse the fitting. Flush the water
system repeatedly to ensure removal of traces of Citric or Formic acid.
7. Clean air filters regularly to avoid choking.
8. Remove carbon from ceramic, terminals, chamber / oscillator section of the
valves to avoid internal arcing.
9. Clean / tighten the connections to / from the valves at regular intervals to
avoid heating, melting and thus failure of the valve.
Please contact AIMIL for other recommendations and the details of above checks
/ procedures.
Q.
Should we remove valves for cleaning / maintenance?
A.
Due to aging, the filament of the oscillator valves becomes
fragile. Therefore we should avoid removing the valve from operation
frequently. e2v Technologies applied Technologies also manufactures / supply
valve with removable water jackets. These jackets can be removed while the
valve is being mounted on the chassis for de-scaling and cleaning. Utmost care
should be taken while taking off and mounting the jackets / valves to avoid
breakage of filament.
Q.
Does
e2v Technologies have equivalent / replacement for Siemens, Thomson, Phillips,
BEL, and other manufacturers?
A.
Yes, e2v
Technologies supplies equivalents to oscillator valves of different makes and
brand like Siemens RS3060CJ, BEL50000, ITK15-2, ITK30-2. While some are direct
equivalents, some might require minor modifications in the circuitry and
housing.
Q.
Does
e2v Technologies valves support applications like RF Drying and wood gluing?
A.
e2v Technologies
make valves support various applications like Steel Tube Welding, Induction
Hardening, PVC Welding, Pre-heating, RF Drying, Biscuit Drying, Embossing. It
also finds applications in Food Processing Industry.
