How Can I Use the Elcometer 4340 Automatic Film Applicator to Make a Sample Film?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

When developing products such as paints, varnishes, cosmetics, or glues, it is essential to test their properties as part of their development. The Elcometer 4340 Motorized Automatic Film Applicator is an invaluable tool to ensure consistent, repeatable, and reproducible films. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps to create a film using the Elcometer 4340, ensuring precision and accuracy in your tests.

Introduction to the Elcometer 4340

The Elcometer 4340 is designed to produce high-quality films for testing purposes. Its motorized and automated features ensure uniformity and reproducibility, critical for fair and accurate tests. This guide will provide detailed instructions on setting up and using the Elcometer 4340.

Setting Up the Elcometer 4340

Leveling the Table
To begin, place the supplied bubble level on the table and adjust the feet of the unit until the table is level. A level table is crucial for achieving consistent film thickness.

Powering On the Device

Switch the Elcometer 4340 on using the switch at the back of the machine, followed by the green button on the control panel. This will power up the device, readying it for use.

Adjusting Carriage Speed and Positions
Setting the Carriage Speed:
The carriage speed, which determines how quickly the film is applied, can be set using the dial on the control panel. The dial ranges from 1 to 11. It is essential to set the speed when the carriage is stationary to avoid any inconsistencies.

Setting Start and Stop Positions:
The carriage start and stop positions define the length of your film. This is adjusted using two knobs on the back of the machine. To set the start position, press the carriage start button, allowing the carriage to move to the end position. Unscrew the starting position knob, adjust its position, and re-tighten. For the stop position, press the current return button to move the carriage to the start position and adjust the end position knob similarly.

Mounting the Substrate

Using a Standard Table
Ensure both the table and the underside of the substrate are clean. Secure the substrate to the table using the spring clamp. The clamp can be attached at two locations on the table, one for A3 size substrates and the other for A4 size substrates.

Using a Vacuum Table
If using a vacuum table, powered by a separate vacuum pump, position your substrate and attach the vacuum pump using the hose to the connection on the left side of the machine. Select the substrate size on the vacuum control, and switch on the vacuum pump. This will draw the substrate onto the table, holding it firmly. Cover any areas of the vacuum table not covered by the specimen with scotch tape or similar removableble thin tape to ensure maximum suction.

Double Channel Vacuum Table
For thin substrates, the double channel vacuum table is used. It creates a vacuum from the edges rather than through perforations, keeping the thin material flat and secure without creating irregularities.

Attaching the Applicator

Choosing the Applicator
The Elcometer 4340 comes with various carriages: a film applicator carriage, a spiral barcode carriage, and a combined film applicator and spiral barcode carriage. This guide uses the combined carriage, standard with the Elcometer 4340.

Mounting the Applicator
To use the applicator, rotate the carriage to the raised position. Fit the applicator pushing bar into position using the knurled screws. Place the applicator on the substrate until it touches the pushing bar. Adjust the height of the pushing bar using the screws to ensure it is at the correct level. For lightweight applicators like the Baker, place the supplied weight onto the two locating pegs to keep the applicator firmly in contact with the substrate.

Creating the Film

Pouring the Test Sample
Pour your test sample in front of your chosen tool, ensuring it is evenly spread across the width of the applicator. Avoid getting the product in front of the applicator’s feet, as this can cause uneven application.

Starting the Carriage
With the machine on, press the carriage start button to create your film. The carriage will stop automatically at the stop position. Once the film is created, remove the applicator immediately to avoid excess product dripping onto the substrate.

Using a Sacrificial Piece of Paper
To prevent spillage onto the substrate or test bed, place a thin sheet of paper under the end of your substrate and ensure the stop position of your carriage goes beyond the length of your substrate. This way, any excess coating is pushed onto the sacrificial paper, which can be removed once the film is created.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Cleaning the Applicator
Clean your chosen applicator immediately after creating the film to prevent the product from drying onto the applicator, which could affect its performance.

Returning the Carriage
Press the carriage return button to reset the carriage to the start position. Repeat the process as needed to produce multiple films.

In Short:
The Elcometer 4340 Automatic Film Applicator ensures consistent, repeatable, and reproducible films, vital for accurate testing of products like paints, varnishes, cosmetics, and glues. By following this detailed guide, you can achieve precise and uniform films, enhancing the reliability of your tests.
